The IDEAL program gathers several European universities around a common project: building a common curriculum for medical and healthcare students, educators and professionals in communication and interprofessionality through the spectrum of infectious diseases and emerging pathogens.

Université Paris Cité
Université Paris Cité (UPCité) has established itself as a key player in Erasmus+ projects, with extensive experience in international project management and innovative teaching methods in health sciences.
Université Paris Cité’s medical school has led Erasmus+ initiatives such as the International Intensive Infectious Diseases Course (I3DC – 2011-2016) for undergraduate medical students, in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh and UCSC Roma as well as MedMOTION (2013–14).
It has also coordinated partnerships, including IDEAL (2016–2019), IDEAL+ (2019-2022), IDEALITER (2022-2025), Inspire (2016-2021), POEM-SET (2021–2024), Dominos (2021–2024), Acronym (2022-2025) and Dominos 2 (2024-2027) while also participating in O-Health-Edu (2019–2022), Conscious (2018–2021), and Conscious II (2021–2024).
The institution also leads the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s in Nanomedicine for Drug Delivery (NANOMED).
Universidad Complutense de Madrid

Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) is one of Spain’s largest and most prestigious public research universities, renowned for its academic excellence and commitment to research, education and innovation.
Its Department of Public Health and Maternal-Child Health specializes in public health research, education and policy development, with a focus on maternal and child health. The department collaborates with national and international organizations to tackle global health challenges, particularly in pediatric infectious diseases.
Universidad Complutense de Madrid benefits from a strong international presence, engaging in research collaborations across Europe, Africa and Latin America.
Its school of medicine includes full-time researchers, professors and postdoctoral fellows, alongside graduate students and research assistants, all dedicated to connecting research and clinical practice to influence global health policies.
National and Kapodistrian – University of Athens

Founded in 1837, National and Kapodistrian – University of Athens (NKUA) is Greece’s oldest university and a pioneer in higher education in the Balkan and Eastern Mediterranean regions.
The Athens Medical School is a key player in educational, research, clinical and charity activities at both national and international levels and has a strong tradition of promoting international student mobility, particularly through Erasmus+ exchanges.
National and Kapodistrian – University of Athens (NKUA) offers foreign language programs, including a medical degree program for international students (since 2021) and encourages participation in multi-country research projects to drive innovation.
Its core expertise lies in medical education and research (including rare diseases), international academic collaboration (student/staff mobility, multi-country projects) and policy development in higher education and global academic networks.
National and Kapodistrian – University of Athens (NKUA) is part of the IDEAL program since 2019.
Universiteit Antwerpen

Founded in 2003, Universiteit Antwerpen (UA) is a young, dynamic, and research-intensive university, committed to high-quality in education, internationally competitive research and an entrepreneurial approach.
The School of Medicine and Health Sciences is Universiteit Antwerpen (UA)’s largest faculty, that adopts evidence-based, interdisciplinary approach to medical education, fostering strong connections between education, research and clinical practice. The school is actively involved in international medical education projects, including summer schools and short courses.
Infectious diseases and vaccinology are among Universiteit Antwerpen (UA)’s main frontline research domains and one of the key focus fields of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences that cover molecular mechanisms of infectious diseases and immune responses, development of antimicrobials, surveillance studies on microbial resistance, vaccine trials, epidemiology and modeling of vaccine-preventable diseases.
Universiteit Antwerpen (UA) has key research centers such as the Center for the Evaluation of Vaccination (CEV) that focuses on (sero-)epidemiology of vaccine-preventable diseases, vaccine safety, efficacy and effectiveness, injection and diagnostic device research, kinetics of vaccine-induced antibodies, including maternal immunization and mucosal immunity and the Global Health Institute (GHI) that specializes in vaccine-preventable diseases, reproductive health, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), emerging microbial threats, parasitic diseases and health logistics, conducts high-quality research on public health challenges in low-and middle-income countries.
Both CEV and GHI were founded by key figures involved in the IDEAL program, reinforcing Universiteit Antwerpen (UA)’s leadership in infectious diseases research and global health.

Università Campus BioMedico di Roma

Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma (UCBM) is a private, non-profit university in Rome, founded in 1993.
Its integrated courses combine knowledge from multiple scientific fields, providing comprehensive training for careers in healthcare, research and industry thanks to its multiple research centers:
- Interdisciplinary Research Center (CIR), improving collaboration across academic departments
- Advanced Research Center in Biomedicine and Bioengineering (PRABB)
- Centre for the Health of the Elderly (CESA),
- An on-campus University Hospital, enabling practical training and direct application of research in clinical settings
Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma (UCBM) aims at integrating scientific domains with a focus on human-centric innovation. Its unique combination of healthcare, engineering and sustainability fosters cross-disciplinary collaboration at all levels, keeping students and researchers updated on scientific and technological advancements.
Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma (UCBM) is a leader in bioethics, particularly in the IDEAL consortium, where it implements intensive interprofessional medical courses with a focus on bioethical discussions, interprofessional communication, medical decision-making in bioethical contexts and artificial intelligence in healthcare.
Université de Tours

Founded in 1970, Université de Tours (UT) is the largest public higher education institution in France’s Centre–Val de Loire area. It combines education, research and innovation with a strong commitment to European cooperation and international openness, particularly in health sciences.
Université de Tours (UT)’s Faculty of Health Sciences prepares students for multidisciplinary healthcare environments and integrates research-driven education with clinical practice through partnerships with the University Hospital of Tours.
It has been participating in several national and international initiatives such as Loire Val-Health Project (2024–2031) that focuses on mental health, neurosciences, biopharmaceuticals and infectious diseases and promotes innovative educational approaches and cross-sector collaborations and NEOLAiA European University Alliance that contributes to global health, inclusive academic environments and new mobility formats (digital and blended).
Université de Tours (UT) coordinates two Erasmus Mundus Joint Master (EMJM) Programs:
- IDOH (Infectious Diseases and One Health) that addresses health challenges at the human–animal–environment interface
- ISSF (Insects as Solutions for a Sustainable Future) that explores the role of insects in environmental sustainability, agriculture, technology and public health
Université de Tours (UT) joined IDEAL program in 2023 and implemented an IDEAL summer school on maternal and child infections in June 2025, in collaboration with Université Paris Cité (UPCité) and National and Kapodistrian – University of Athens (NKUA).
An intensive blended 2027 winter school is under preparation in partnership with Universidad Complutense de Madrid, focusing on infectious diseases and the One Health approach.
Universitätsklinikum Hamburg Eppendorf

Universitätsklinikum Hamburg Eppendorf (UKE) is one of Europe’s leading academic hospitals and medical schools and the largest health center in Hamburg.
Its five main research areas are immunology and infection, neuroscience, oncology, cardiovascular disease and health sciences.
Since 2012, Universitätsklinikum Hamburg Eppendorf (UKE) has implemented an integrated, interdisciplinary curriculum focused on practical, evidence-based medical education and infectious disease education through the “study helix” and state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities.
The Hamburg Center for Inflammation, Infection and Immunity improves international cooperation in research and teaching by enhancing understanding of inflammatory and infectious processes and developing new diagnostic and treatment strategies using a transnational approach.
Partnerships with the German Centre for Infection Research (DZIF) and the Leibniz Centre Infection (LCI) (including the Leibniz Institute of Virology, Bernhard-Nocht-Institute for Tropical Medicine and Research Center Borstel) enhance Universitätsklinikum Hamburg Eppendorf (UKE)’s infectious disease expertise in clinical care and state-of-the-art medical treatment, research and education and public health preparedness and high-consequence infectious disease management.
University of Nicosia

Established in 2011 in collaboration with St George’s, University of London, University of Nicosia (UNIC) is the largest university in Cyprus and the largest in Southern Europe teaching primarily in English.
University of Nicosia (UNIC)’s Medical School is committed to multidisciplinary health research at national and international levels, with a focus on infectious diseases, medical education, clinical communication and health psychology, emerging technologies and digital health and One Health.
Research is cross-departmental, encouraging collaboration between basic and clinical sciences, primary care, population health and the School of Veterinary Medicine.
University of Nicosia (UNIC)’s Medical School is a pioneer in medical education, implementing interactive and interprofessional training methods, such as small-group activities (case-based and problem-based learning), flipped classrooms and team-based learning, hands-on practical experience in clinical and community settings and simulation training at the UNIC Clinical Skills Laboratory (CCL).
Since 2012, University of Nicosia (UNIC)’s Mobile Clinical Training initiative has provided free healthcare services and screenings to remote communities, refugees, and vulnerable populations.

Specialized in innovative medical education, Aston University focuses on primary care, community health and global health equity, preparing students for real-world healthcare challenges. Its partnerships with NHS trusts and hospitals for hands-on training and research support the research priorities of the institutions (infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance, neuroscience and mental health, AI in medicine, public health and epidemiology).
Aston Institute of Health and Neurodevelopment (AIHN), Aston Pharmacy School and Aston Center for Healthy Ageing are cutting-edge centers for innovation and industry collaboration that focus on lifespan development, brain health and neurodiversity, cooperates with NHS, pharmaceutical companies, charities and global health organizations to improve patient outcomes, research on aging, frailty and age-related diseases as well as develop of innovative care models for elderly populations.
NHS Lothian

NHS Lothian is one of Scotland’s largest and most innovative health boards and a pioneer in clinical research, medical education and public health, with a strong commitment to translating scientific advancements into patient care.
NHS Lothian is known for its research and clinical excellence centers such as the Edinburgh Royal InfirmaryandSpecialist Hospitals that works neurological disorders, stroke, and dementia research, the Cancer Research Center that collaborates with the University of Edinburgh on oncology, precision medicine and clinical trials and the Infectious Diseases Unit that does research on antimicrobial resistance, HIV and emerging infections.
NHS Lothian is also connected to Usher Institute that studies epidemiology, health inequalities, chronic disease management and Global Health (tropical diseases, pandemic preparedness, health systems…) and Queen Margaret University (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech sciences).
Its numerous collaborations (WHO, CDC, Horizon Europe, IMI, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine) improve research dissemination and health literacy.
